Sara’s Story

When designing my charm, I wanted something different than my children’s names or initials. I decided to use the initial from the first name of my husband (Tom), my two children (Ella and Zachary) and myself (Sara) to form the word “zest”. The meaning of the word zest is “keen relish; hearty enjoyment; gusto” and also “liveliness or energy; animating spirit”. This charm is not only a reminder of the ones I love, but also a reminder to enjoy life every day. I chose 2 stones to compliment my charm. The garnet is for my daughter’s and my birthstone. The clear quartz is said to transform and focus energy and to keep you in touch with your spiritual side. Thank you for letting me share my story!

Rebekah’s Story

After deliberating for some time, I realized that the way I wanted to honor my children and husband would require a little saving up. So, I decided to start my necklace out just for me.  My first initial is in large lower case on a green gold disc. My birth date is on a silver mini tag, and I have a Peridot for my birthstone. I’ll probably always keep these together on a separate necklace, and sometime in the near future, I’ll start another necklace for my children and husband, and who knows what else!

Dickie’s Story

The first charm on my necklace is for my husband; his initials are “DRD” and our anniversary date is on the back. My husband is a “Junior”, however I forgot to put it at the end of his initials, so I’ve ordered a small unframed heart with “JR” on it to fix this (with “Oops” stamped on the back!) The next charm has my daughter’s name, Reid, on it with her birth date on the back. The small charm “D” stands for the first letter of my nickname. The pearl is my daughter’s birthstone and the mystic topaz is my husband’s birthstone; the aquamarine is mine. I also have an Emerald for my mother and the Peridot is my godmother’s stone. This necklace is just the beginning—my story is not nearly finished.

Jennifer W’s Story

I wanted to have my children close at heart at all times. Nicholas is my son, and his name is stamped on one charm. My daughter is Ryan; her name is stamped on a separate charm. Nicholas and Ryan share the same birthday, February 5. The dog tag charm has Feb 5th on one side and the years they were born on the other. I will soon be adding another charm to the collection with the addition of a new baby in June, 2009.

Amy M’s Story

Amy M's Story

It took me a month to decide what I really wanted. I decided to do a charm for each of my children, one for my anniversary, and one for myself.  My son Ryan’s charm is a silver disc with his name on the front and birthday on the back. His disc is framed in green gold—green is his favorite color.  My daughter’s charm has both her first and middle names, Ashley Elizabeth, on a silver disc framed in rose gold. Her birthday is on the back. My anniversary charm is on a silver disc framed in yellow gold, with a script “M” for my last name and the date on the back. The charm I picked for myself is a mini in rose gold with a butterfly stamp. All my charms are different sizes, and now I am thinking of adding some stones and maybe another disc in a different size.

Hazel

Lewisburg, WV—Hazel Boutique, located in historic downtown Lewisburg, WV, offers an exquisite collection of hand-selected women’s clothing, intimates, jewelry, accessories, body care products, and gift items created by designers with style and conscience. The boutique, which opened in its current location in May 2005, features products primarily produced in the U.S.A., though periodically items are purchased from Fair Trade producers in developing countries. ‘Fair Trade’ is an organized social movement and market-based approach to empowering developing country producers and promoting sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a fair price for goods and services, including labor, as well as social and environmental standards in areas related to the production.

In addition to its commitment to social justice, Hazel owner Carin White is dedicated to animal welfare and environmental awareness, demonstrated through an exciting selection of hip, Eco-Fashion lines, made from organically grown and recycled materials, as well as cruelty-free/vegan apparel, accessories and body products. “You should feel as good about the clothing you wear, as they make you look,” said White. One such clothing line is Sworn Virgins, the brainchild of partners Roshanne Aghelvi and Alex Amini. This fashion-forward line is made from bamboo fibers, spun into ultra soft Jersey, creating comfortable, chic clothing that doesn’t require extra care.

As consumers seek more environmentally friendly products, producers are finding exciting ways to meet the demand. Heather Moore of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, started her career in jewelry design in 1994. Beginning in 2005, her focus shifted to highly personalized fine jewelry, crafted by hand using recycled sterling silver and 14k gold, offered in a range of colors. Each piece is hand stamped, and can be accessorized with semiprecious to precious stones. Hazel has featured Heather Moore Jewelry since late 2007, and just this October opened a Jewelry Lounge within its Washington Street Store. The store offers consultation services for each Heather Moore piece, assisting customers in creating jewelry that tells their personal stories. When Erica Vaughan sat down with Carin to create her necklace, she spoke about how important her mother was in her life, and how much she missed her since her passing. Vaughan said, “I just want to feel her.” Carin suggested a charm featuring Erica’s mother’s name in Braille, and Vaughan couldn’t be more pleased. “Whenever I think about her, (reaching up to touch her necklace) there she is.”

The Heather Moore Jewelry Trunk Show will be at Hazel on Wednesday, December 3 at 7:00pm, featuring a cocktail reception, and for a continental breakfast showing on Thursday, December 4 beginning at 8:30am. The show will be a time for established HMJ clients to share their jewelry stories, and join those who are ready to begin their collection. During the show items will be available for immediate purchase, and special orders can also be placed; the deadline for Holiday orders is December 8. Special promotions and discounts will be advertised as the event dates draw closer.

Hazel is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00am to 5:30pm, and shopping is available 24hours a day through its website, www.hazelboutique.com. During Downtown Lewisburg’s Open House Weekend, November 22-23, the store will be open during regular Saturday hours and on Sunday, from 12noon to 5:30pm.

Jaeda’s Story

Starting at the top, the open circle charm has the names “Doles” and “Presson” on the one side, and “Hess” and “Torregrossa” on the other. Presson is my last name, and Doles is my grandmothers maiden name (the uniting of one side of my family), and Hess is my mother’s maiden name, and Torregrossa my other grandmothers maiden name (the uniting of the other side).

0916 is my birthday (I’m a fan of random sets of numbers that aren’t obvious dates). Since this picture I’ve added a diamond.

The green gold ID tag has four stars that represent my mother, brother, sister, and myself. On the back is VICTORIA going vertically, and JAEDA, EMILY, and TOM going through it in a crossword fashion.

The JP are not only my initial, but my dad’s. He passed away when I was 16, so on the back is “ANGEL 1998”. The five is for one of those random numbers that is common in my life. My dad passed away on the fifth, five people in the family…. Since this picture also I’ve added a small ID tag with my middle name on one side, and all the zip codes I lived in on the other.

Adorned with green sapphires (my birthstone), clear and cognac diamonds, I wear it on a white gold ball chain.

Carin’s Story

This is the necklace that I had made for myself when we first invited Heather Moore Jewelry to Hazel Boutique. I wanted to combine the metals and disc styles so that I could show people the basics at a glance. Over a year later, we still often suggest that people consider starting with these basics–initial, anniversary, and kids. I did my initial C on a large gold disc with a gold frame. The rimless medium silver disc with the heart commemorates the day that my husband and I were married in the presence of our family, friends, and Elvis at The Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas. The small gold rimless disc that says Jed is in honor of our first son. The medium silver disc with the gold frame is for our second son, Elias. Elias is adopted from Ethiopia and on the back is the date that he arrived in the United States in my husband’s arms. It also has a single black diamond.

My necklace has grown a lot since these early days!! I have switched to a 24 inch yellow gold ball chain and have added a gold dog bone for my beloved little chihuahua, Spud. I also have a mini framed gold disc with a skull and cross bones for my two little pirates and a gold open circle the says “The force will be with you always.” There are 1.5 mm diamonds on either side of “always” of course! On a large rose gold id tag with a yellow frame and stars, I have a favorite Grateful Dead lyric: Nine-mile skid on a ten-mile ride Hot as a pistol but cool inside. That’s for me!! I also wear a 16 inch gold link chain which holds a single jumbo gold disc paying homage to my birthplace–Atlantic City, NJ. The gems change a lot, and the charms move around, but that is one of my favorite things about the line. When I get restless, I can just mix it up!
